An uncontrolled drawer is a landfill.
Utensils and knives strewn across the drawer was a situation I faced as my school year progressed. My lack of discipline led to this mess as I wouldn’t bother to think about where to place items. I was finding it increasingly inconvenient to grab a pair of chopsticks or a whisk when faced with a minefield of knives and other objects in the way. Enough was enough. It was time to change my behavior and organize my drawer.
Playing with pegs and boards until something clicked.
Considerations and Constraints:
I planned on 3D printing parts so flat pieces that printed straight on the bed without supports and post-processing was ideal for reducing production time.
Space is precious. A common drawer organizer design such as a tray with dividers would waste a lot of space. The bottom of the tray takes up some height and would make it inconvenient to store large and irregularly-shaped items such as a whisk.
I wanted an organizer that could be adapted to my needs, not something that would give me frustration.
Ideation
Pegboards and wooden dowel dish holders were the first things that came to mind when I was thinking on how to organize a space. However, I felt I was constraining myself too much and thought about how Legos snapped together to create larger assemblies. So, I pivoted. I kept the boards and the pegs to use as building blocks to create my customizable organizer.
